The Loss of a Dear Friend

Monday, September 29, 2014

In 2003/2004 When I was a single teen mom I lived in a 2 bedroom decent sized apartment with Jordan. I went to school and had a part time job. While at my job I met a lady named Dale who quickly became like a second mom to me. We had a bond I never ever thought would be possible with someone who isn't family, and we not only worked together but went to each others houses for tea, went shopping together, you name it we did it!

Fast forward a few years and her daughter and I were pregnant at the same time. Her daughter was a few years older than me but they weren't as close as her and I were.

August 2007 When I went in to have Ava, her and her daughter Wanda were at the hospital. Her daughter was due a month behind, but she had complications and she had called me earlier that day announcing she had became a Grandma!

Turns out Wanda had a csection and while they were operating they noticed she was full of cancer. They agreed to start treatments but they weren't hopeful.

Wanda lived to see her baby turn 2 months old, then she passed. It was the most heart wrenching thing I ever had to be apart of, and to this day it brings me to tears to think about.

Fast forward to 2009. I got a phone call from my friend Dale. She was just home from a doctors appointment where she was given not so good news, she too had cancer. WHAT? I couldn't grasp this for anything. It was not possible she too had cancer! She was raising her Granddaughter by herself and she was just two! How could this be?

I was pregnant with #4 Jayden at the time of the news and I was busy on and off, she would call me all the time but I would be busy or not home, forget to call her back Or we would just keep missing each other.

November 2009 rolled around and she and I spoke about twice a week, until everyone in my household had the flu. Once I felt better I promised I would call her back. A week went by and I was feeling better but she wasn't answering her phone.

I kept calling.

No answer.

Finally after a full week and a half of trying I had a bad feeling. Very bad. So I logged onto the internet and went to our local newspaper, clicked obituaries and there it was.

She had passed away almost THREE WEEKS AGO. A day or two after her last phone call to me.

That's why she didn't answer.

I lost my mind. It was late at night, my kids were asleep, my husband on his way home from work... There I sat on the middle of my bed sobbing while I stare at the computer screen. She was gone.

I couldn't believe it.

I had missed the funeral, I had missed my chance to speak to her again. I was completely crushed.

She had told me a month or two prior that she had my contact info pinned to her fridge and her niece was under strict orders to call me the MINUTE anything happens. Of course, in that moment I'm sure they have a million other things going on they hadn't thought of it but I was crushed. She was gone, I missed saying goodbye. It was and still is so very painful. She was by my side for years. Listened to me gush about my husband when I first met him and she was a very huge part of Jordan's life too...

So today I was scrolling through photo albums on my Facebook and came across an album of Dale at my house with her baby granddaughter Kassy about a year before her passing. I don't have a single photo of her, just these photos of Av and Kass with Dale in the background and I never got one of the both of us either, I'm not sure why. I regret this so much. But, I just wanted to post about my dear friend who I miss terribly and wish I could give one last phone call to, as I sit here remembering her today.

Ava and Kassy.

I am not too sure what I believe in for after someone passes but I do feel like I feel her energy around me often!

Hold your friends close, you never know when they'll be gone.

My Simple Steps for Balancing a Blog

Wednesday, September 24, 2014

People have asked me how in the world I can keep up with a blog while having 6 kids, a husband and lots of pets. Well, simply put... I have a routine. Much like every other aspect of my life, routine is key. Why? It's not rocket science its a blog! Absolutely correct but I wouldn't be able to juggle posting as much as I do, plus getting all my housework done, play time with my kids, reading time with my kids, pick up/drop off for school, homemade meals, you name it I get it all done. All because I balance it very, very well.

So I've put together my top four steps I use to balance this blog.

Plan ahead
I made an insert for my Erin Condren life planner with a whole list of ideas for blog topics. I usually have my topics written down in my planner every Sunday for the week but If there's a day I don't know what to write about I go to that list and plan what I will write. If I already have an idea in mind I use my phone "notes" and I write down points, or key ideas I need to touch on in the post and it's ready for when I need it. Even this post I had to step away from the computer, grab the baby from my husband to nurse him for his nap and I finished this post - in my notes section on my phone while he nursed!

Blog while kids are in bed or at school
This is probably the best decision for me because even if my husband is home getting even half an hour of quiet on the computer to whip up a post doesn't happen all too often. So, when the kids are in bed or during the day while at school (if I happen to have a day where both little boys nap at the same time) this is when I can get posts written I need written. Even if I have to stay up an extra half hour to an hour at night to get what I need to done, I do it - but there has only ever happened once.

Save as draft
This is probably the BEST feature for bloggers. Saving as a draft to go back and finish later without having to redo work is the best because I simply can't predict when a baby will wake up, when I have more than just a few things to get done in a pinch or if something comes up. Saving as a draft has also come in handy when I'm writing one blog post and think of another one I can save, switch over and start another post and go right back to the previous!

Don't stress!
This has been something I've struggled with. If I have a review due, a giveaway or just something I need to get post I tend to stress and I had to tell myself, which all the above steps there's NO reason to stress. I have a note beside my desk that says "don't sweat the small stuff" which is a constant reminder because stressing about it doesn't help anyone. Breathe, relax and get what you need to get done!

So there you have it! Nothing spectacular but it's how I've been able to balance having a blog with motherhood, being a wife, household duties and tending to other daily musts.

Do you have a blog? How do you balance life while keeping up with your blog?

Five Amazing Blogs You Should Absolutely Read

Monday, September 22, 2014

Over the past 12 years that I've had blogs on and off there have been many blogs I've grown to love. Not all are still active today which is unfortunate because they were incredible. But I've found lots of new ones along the way I cannot go a day or two without reading.

Some of the blogs I'm going to share I haven't been following for long but have grown to love, and some I've read for years!

So here you have it, blogs you SHOULD be reading!

Spiffykerms - absolutely amazing. I've known Nancy for years online. Her blog has been around since 2003. Not only does she blog about beauty, fitness and fashion she also has really great reviews. She is an absolute must read.

Masshole Mommy - A newer blog I've started reading, but has been around a good while - She is one of my must reads daily. She always has great tips, entertaining posts and fantastic stories and photos.

GayNYCdad - I don't follow many dad blogs but this one is a must. He has interesting, and great posts. His son is around my oldest sons age so even my son gets a kick out of reading his site for all the latest and cool reviews, and info!

Carol Au Courant - Semi local to me Carol not only reviews hotels, posts amazing recipes and giveaways but her blog is just a great read! I love finding really cool local places to visit, and read her experiences, it's a must read!

Krystal's Kitsch - Stop everything you are doing and head to Krystal's blog. Want to find mouth watering recipes? Look no more. Krystal has it all. I'm absolutely obsessed with finding new meals, and fun dishes - she has the most incredible recipes and posts.

Well there you have it! 5 blogs I read daily and absolutely recommend if you are on the hunt for new blogs to follow along and read. I promise they are well worth it! Happy Reading!

Bell Media #CyberTalk

Monday, September 15, 2014

Making sure my kids are safe is and always has been my #1 priority. Now that they are all getting older and wanting to venture online to play games, chat with friends and get homework done I needed to make sure that not only was the internet content they'd be looking at safe for them to browse but also that they were safe while doing it.

I have some rules in the house but the most important rule we have when it comes to online - never give personal information or download ANYTHING, ever.

My kids don't get to sit online and have free roam, I sit with them doing my work, planning or whatever I need to but I'm right with them while they do their thing.

Jordan being 11 gets a little bit more freedom when it comes to online. He has his own phone, facebook account, twitter and youtube he likes to follow gamers on - but he's had plenty of years of me discussing the dos/donts of the internet and knows how to deal with anything that may happen.

Not long ago Jordan was playing an online game beside me and he said "hey mom look this person wants me to call them" I grabbed the computer and took the phone number down. I called it and got 2 young kids, I told them I'm a mom and it's very dangerous to give out their phone number and I don't think their parents would approve, I asked to speak to an adult and they hung up on me.

We talked about it, which is the most important thing. Being open and honest, Jordan couldn't believe how crazy those kids were. He brought up what if we were crazy old men or women looking to cause trouble. It was a very scary situation. I ended up sending an email to the parental email that signed that child up for the game, but I never heard back. So I don't know if they got it or not.

It is so very important to speak to your kids about Cyber Safety. Protecting passwords, never giving out personal information and avoiding strangers are so important. Kids can be fearless and get caught up in the games or chatting. I don't think they ever really stop to think "what if" so it's our jobs to make sure we let them know.

My kids get 1 hour of computer time a day. None of them are allowed on social media except Jordan. He has a facebook and twitter which I strictly monitor. He wasn't allowed these things for a very long time either. When we moved to Toronto from Kingston I signed him up for facebook which he didn't have the password to until recently so he could keep in touch with his best friend from back home - it wasn't until his 10th Birthday I gave him the password, and let him venture on but if he ever wanted on before that it had to be strictly with me.

Now at 11 I still monitor all messages, and everything he does. I will probably for a long while. If he ever has a problem he knows to come to me right away.

You can never be too careful online, the more kids know and understand about safety and things that can happen the less likely they will be to make poor decisions and be a bit more cautious.

Please be sure to join in September 17th for the Government of Canada’s #CyberTalk, an online Q&A which you can attend on facebook.
