Like Soda? - A SodaStream Review

Sunday, May 04, 2014

I had heard so many mixed reviews for SodaStream when we decided we'd go ahead and get one to see if we could save on sodas. Given the fact I am trying to drink less, I thought it would be a great idea - especially because it turns normal tap water into SODA! I thought it would be something we could really benefit from.

I went and picked up a kit called SodaStream Source that was suppose to have samples in it. Got home and unsealed the box to find not only was there no samples, but there was also no CO2 Canister. So we packed it back up and took it back to the store. We then got the cheaper single SodaStream Jet that didn't come with anything just the machine and the co2 canister (which thankfully did come with the second one)

The second machine we picked up!

We picked up Soda, Diet Soda, Kool Aid Grape, Root Beer and Crystal Light Lemonade.
We sat and tried every single one and I basically had the same reaction to each: GROSS.

Every single one tasted like Tonic Water. Something I hate on its own but mixed with flavors is even worse.

I decided to give it a chance before I wrote up my review because you can't exactly tell from 1 night of tasting.

We've had it about a month now and I still have nothing great to say. My husband on the other hand always buys flavored carbonated water so of course it's a winner in his eyes, but I still can't stomach it. It actually makes me feel sick to my stomach.

The ease of the system is wonderful, I just don't think its for you if you don't like the bitterness of Tonic Water because it leaves a pretty distinct after taste, and I can taste it no matter what is added. We've played with the amount of syrup we add, we've added more, added less, used the exact amount and it's just not for me.

Thankfully, it wasn't money wasted because my husband actually thinks its fantastic. He's since bought himself another syrup, he got himself some Cranberry Raspberry soda.

To use the SodaStream is pretty easy. You fill the bottle with water to the fill line on the bottle, place it on the machine, screw it on and press down the button to carbonate the water. Once you do that and get your desired fizziness you then remove from the machine, add the syrup and gently move it around (not a vicious shake) and enjoy... Well, some of us anyway!

So if you are a big soda drinker like me, but don't enjoy the taste of off brands, or a bitter after taste just like Tonic Water the soda stream probably isn't for you.

However if you do you'd probably get a huge kick out of this system, and it could save you a ton of money. I've loved not having to buy my husband bottles of carbonated water for $1 each time or any pop as he enjoys the SodaSteam even more than name brand sodas!

Thoughts?
Do you have a SodaStream? Leave your thoughts below, I'd love to know how others use theirs and if you like/love/hate them... I want to love ours, so I'm willing to try others mixes, even homemade if its good enough!

  2. Enjoyed your review! I love my soda stream source, I have had it several months. I like some of the soda stream flavors, but some I do not care for. I really like using concentrated frozen 100% juice or fresh squeezed strained citrus juice with sweetner or a small amount of a complementary soda stream diet flavor....like white grape juice or cran raspberry frozen concentrate with diet ginger ale or lemon lime.
