We Are Who Our Kids See...

Thursday, February 27, 2014

I've wanted to write something like this for quite some time but I haven't really had the chance to sit down and write out exactly what I wanted to. Yesterday was Pink Shirt Day in support of anti-bullying. Something that is very near and dear to my heart. So what better time to write this than now?

While we didn't have proper official Pink Shirt Day t-shirts myself and my 2 girls wore Pink in support of the day.

As a mother of six children, four of which are in school I can tell you bullying is a HUGE issue. Huge. I didn't realize it until moving to such a big city, but even before that my son who at the time was only 4 years old was harassed by 2 boys who lived at the end of our old street.

Now that my kids are older and in school I've come to realize just how big of an issue bullying really is. It's pretty bad.

Last year we even had to contact our Mayor and our local MPP - the bullying in the school was so bad for my oldest, and nothing was really done about it until we did reach out to the Mayor's office and our local MPP. Which to me it should never be that bad where you'd have to go so high up but it seems if you aren't getting anywhere with the school, or school board that is the way to go.

My kids aren't perfect, who is? But my kids don't go to school everyday looking for a fight. Looking to find someone to pick on, or abuse. My kids used to enjoy school, they'd talk about it all the time, lay their outfits out for the next day in their rooms and even help me make their lunches. Not so much anymore. They still love school and are eager to go, but some days they couldn't care less and it's not because of the fact it's school, it's for the simple fact a lot of these kids they go to school with aren't very nice.

I've been watching. I've been noticing a big trend at our school. The kids that seem to give other kids the most problems? Their parents are no better. Walking around with attitudes, like they are the best, they nor their kids can't do any wrong. It's those types of people who need to step back and take a look at what is going on because as parents we need to realize we are who our kids see. We are.

Sure, our kids are their own person, have their own bodies and minds but who do you think their greatest example is? I know for certain my girls look up to me more than anyone else on this Earth. I know the second I mention something about my hair, or my shirt - they are going to automatically agree and think the same about my hair or my shirt.

I see the way some of these kids talk to other parents and even teachers and I'm in complete shock. The one kid last year who was a major thorn in our sides who used to pick on my oldest (because after I found out he was smoking pot at the age of TEN and stealing I told my son he couldn't be around him anymore the kid decided he would bully Jordan) - would skip school, swear at teachers which I didn't see until well after we told Jordan he had to stay away and his mother? Couldn't care less about what he was doing. This was obvious when I had to contact her a few times and she basically told me "Well he said he didn't do it" it's crazy. If the police came to my door ever regarding my kids you better believe things would be changing, and at ten? That's just unacceptable.

I think a lot of the bullying stems from home life. These kids have to learn it from somewhere. Happy, well adjusted, loved, kids with involved parent's don't usually have to deal with kids who are picking on other kids, putting their hands on other kids or calling names. It's usually the ones who are struggling -- Do you ever pay attention to those around you while you are picking up or dropping off your kids?

Here's a challenge: Next time take some extra time to just watch and take it all in. It's interesting what you can see and learn from people just by simply standing by watching in the pick up drop off line.

It's most definitely eye opening, and I'm for sure always on guard now. My kids know not to pick on other kids, to help out another child if they see one being picked on, and they also know not to let anyone touch them or make them feel bad about themselves. I make sure to talk to them all the time about who they are, who we are as a family, how much we love and adore them, how amazing they are inside and out. That's important. And even though all it takes it one other child to say one negative thing to your kid to have all of which you've built up come crashing down - it's important to do it anyways, so that when picking up the pieces they've already been told and know and just need to hear it that one more time. Kids are so young, naive, tender, sweet and innocent. Even those that are having issues. It's our jobs as parents to lift our kids up and make them know the good in the world, believe there is good in the world and to not let silly little things like kids who don't know right from wrong bring them down. After all we are preparing them for life, for the world..... it's a scary, scary thing.

You only live once, you only raise these children once. Make it count, because every little thing affects them. Deeply.

Guest Blog: The Frustrations of a Picky Eater.

Wednesday, February 26, 2014

Let me start by saying my children for the most part are very good eaters. They usually eat all of their meals including fruits and vegetables. I have never been the mom to cook separate meals for my kids, they eat what we are eating and that is that.

The past 3-4 weeks my daughter who is 5 today has been a complete nightmare. Bringing home full lunches, only having a few bites at dinner and constantly complaining about what I make. I really am at a loss of what to do. Dinners have always been my least favourite time of day because she is such a slow eater. Since she is in full day school exhaustion can now be added to the mix. We are constantly having to remind her to stop talking and to take another bite. I don't know if that's normal but it's something we have to do or she will go on and on and not eat.

My son who is 22 months old is an amazing eater. He shovels food into his mouth like it's going out of style. I hate to compare the two of them, but I do find myself sometimes saying, "look at your brothers plate, he is done". Dinners almost always end up with my daughter in tears, facing a time out or my husband or myself raising our voices.

I want, no I NEED some solace at mealtime. I don't know when or if this will happen anytime soon, but it's getting to the point where I dread sitting down to eat. I don't know what has come over her all of a sudden and I wish I knew what to do to get her back on track.

In her lunch tomorrow she has her bagel, an assortment of fruit, water and a yogurt. There is no juice, and absolutely no junk! If this lunch comes home untouched I think I may cry.

I really hope this is just a phase that she snaps out of quickly. Of course I understand kids don't like everything us adults do and certain things definitely don't strike their taste buds. I just want her to be eating the way she was just a few short weeks ago.

If you have any experience with picky eaters, suggestions or tips please leave a comment. I am getting quite desperate. Thanks for reading and have a wonderful Wednesday!! Heidi <3

No One Will Think Any Less Of You..

Friday, February 21, 2014

It's no secret I don't like winter. I don't really like Summer all that much either. It's either too cold, or too hot in these seasons and I just don't like. But Spring and Fall? Those are my seasons. I'd give anything right now to have Spring come a bit early, I'm so over the ice and cold!

Living in Canada it's to be expected. We have seasons, we have snow and cold. Yes, All fine and good. But last night after a day of a decent snow fall it was pouring rain with some lovely Thunder and Lightning! Which I've never seen in my life during the winter, at least not that I can remember so that was truly something to see!

But - It made for an interesting morning this morning. My husband worked until 230a last night so I decided I'd walk the kids to school this morning, it was all ice. Sheer ice. How dangerous. Every single one of my kids fell on our walk and I even slipped, but managed to get my balance before slamming into the ice. Sadly, it wasn't the case for another lady. We were crossing the road near the school when she was walking behind us, and Jayden was walking beside me with her son who is in his class all of a sudden we heard a big crash, and a scream. I turned around and Jordan had already taken off behind me to get to her side and I was right behind him. The poor lady had fallen on a  huge thick patch of ice and hit her face on the ice. Her phone, mitts and bag were all around her on the sidewalk. People walking past, and even stepping over her things.

I asked if she was okay, but she didn't respond. I asked again as I saw her face was already red and she was holding onto her forehead. She didn't respond. I looked up and asked the little boy if he could see if she was alright, but he just stood there in shock.

Jordan reached down and grabbed her hand and began to help her up, I grabbed onto her other arm when all she could manage to say was "Thank You"

We figured out she didn't speak any English, so that would explain not even understanding me. She thanked us twice and we walked closely near her to the school. When we arrived the VP was outside helping people on the sidewalk, I told him he may want to just check if shes okay because she fell and hit her head. He thanked me and helped her inside the school.

I dropped the kids off, and walked Jayden down to his class. On my way out I walked past the office where I saw her sitting, crying with ice on her head. Outside the VP thanked me again and urged me to please be careful walking home, he said he hadn't seen it this bad in a while.

I made it home safely, only slipping once but again not falling. The school called to thank me for my help, and to let me know they went up to Jordan's class to thank him as well as not many people anymore help others out. They told me she was ok, refused any medical help beyond ice but did have a very big bump on her forehead so they advised her family to keep watch.

I couldn't believe the amount of people who just kept walking by her, and even walking over her and her items on the sidewalk. It's okay to stop and help if someone falls or is hurt. No one will think any less of you... I do understand everyone was rushing to get to where they needed to be, but as human beings the right thing to do would be stop and help. I'm just glad my amazing son was there to help, and that I taught him enough to know what to do instead of walking past, or even worse over top of someone clearly needing help.

I don't think I'm too surprised though, I've lost a lot of faith in humans lately. So sad.

#MysteryBrand Revealed: Garnier Fructis Damage Eraser

Thursday, February 20, 2014

"Formulated for distressed, damaged hair"

I am thrilled to announce the MysteryBox I got from Influenster not too long ago was Garnier Fructis! In fact it was Garnier Fructis Damage Eraser, and it's amazing!

The 2nd box I received after the test mystery samples featured some great Full Sized products in the Damage Eraser line: Damage Eraser Shampoo, Conditioner, Split End Bandage and Strength Reconstructing Butter. MMMM.

I have been using this product for just over 2 weeks now and I can honestly say I do see a difference. I absolutely love the smell of these products, and the Split Ends Bandage is totally up my alley because I suffer from split ends :x I rarely get to the hair dresser so I'm hoping this helps until I get there for my next appt!

So far, I've noticed not only is my hair much shiner, it's also got a lot more bounce and looks much healthier.

Besides absolutely loving the Split End Serum, I love the butter. It helps strengthen your hair and contains phyto-keratin complex with plant based proteins and fruit concentrate & cupuaçu Butter, with natural lipids. To be used weekly after shampooing.

So I am happy to say I was right when I suggested after a few uses on twitter that it was a Garnier product. I had no idea it would be a fructis line - as I can't use the normal fructis due to the smell triggering my migraines, but this Garnier Fructis Damage Eraser? Not only smells heavenly, but is perfect for my hair. I will continue to buy and use this product as I am finding a big difference in my hair already!

Be sure to head on over to the Influenster site to sign up if you already haven't! You don't want to miss out on these great boxes filled with goodies to test out and promote! It's a lot of fun, and a surprise every time!

Disclosure: I did receive this Garnier Fructis Damage Eraser box from Influenster for free for the purpose of testing and reviewing. The opinions and thoughts expressed here are solely 100% my own and factual, I did not receive any other compensation for my test or review.

Review: Nookums Paci Plushies

Ella Elephant Buddies

I was really looking forward to this review for a few reasons. One being Justin hates all soothers, he has rejected them since a few days after birth when I tried. Which is fine, but now with teething, and separation anxiety he gets it means Mommy is used a lot as a human pacifier so I was hoping to find something that could maybe help a little bit for us.

We received Ella Elephant for review. When it arrived I was very happy to see the soother was one we hadn't tried yet, and the packaging was very nice. I could see everything inside and right away saw how cute Ella was and couldn't wait to try it out!

I was very skeptical though. But at this point knew there was nothing to loose.... Ella was super cute and I went into this knowing Justin is a very high maintenance baby so if it didn't work that was fine, at least I'd be able to still post the review.. even with a sore boob or two ;)

We sterilized the paci and gave it to Justin. At first he kept biting the sides of the pacifier which was okay because PROGRESS! He wouldn't even do that with anything else we've tried. He absolutely loved Ella. He squeeled when he was holding her and kept putting her to his face, it was truly adorable. THEN IT HAPPENED.... HE put it in his mouth!

This was HUGE. Of course it didn't last long and we didn't make a big deal out of it, because if you do - they'll never do it again! He kept playing with it and popping it in and out of his mouth with a suck here and there. He needed to get used to it!

Eventually he did. He absolutely did!

He doesn't take it often, we let him play with it when hes playing with his toys and he will pop it in and out of his mouth himself. The only time he takes it like above is if hes been nursed and laid down while tired. It has also allowed for lots of cuddling and bonding with daddy because it doesn't require me. I can nurse him, and then hand him to daddy for some cuddles with Ella and out like a light Justin goes.

It's been a true miracle - before we couldn't do that, he would wake the second nursing was over if I tried to put him down. I would nurse him to sleep and because he nurses a lot still - every 3ish hours I could run to the store and leave him with daddy but he would wake up the second I'd go, and cry for daddy. I stopped doing that, but now I can run to the corner store and if he wakes daddy can cuddle him with Ella and no tears! He's very very very sweet, and loves cuddles but also loves to suck. He's most definitely a comfort sucker/nurser. He's also the only one out of 6 babies that has never taken a paci. I have no complaints about that, but this is a very nice little break. If I'm home he gets Mommy, if I'm running to the store or shoveling the driveway? He gets Ella... and he doesn't mind. As long as his belly is full and is in Daddy;s arms he is content to suck away!

The only negative thing I have to say about this Paci Plushies? Is that the actual logo rubbed off the paci within a short time of his drool getting all over it. That? isn't a huge deal, not even much of a negative.

Ella Elephant is very light, and adorable. Not like another similar type paci combo we've tried which has a pretty big paci attached that you cannot remove.

With Paci Plushies you can remove the paci, and replace with a different type... or the same one if needed. Which is another huge plus because some babies only take to a certain type of paci so it's easily changed.

Paci Plushies has a lot of animals to choose from: Elephant, Dog, Hippo, Dragon, Turtle, Unicorn... You name it! They also have a few other products I can't wait to try like Chillies - especially with Justin teething.

Ella Elephant retails for $16.00 and you can purchase here. You can visit Paci Plushies here to check out all the other products as well!

I definitely am very glad we were able to give this product a try, and I do recommend it. Especially if your baby does love paci's its a great product!

Disclosure: This is a sponsored post. I was given this product complimentary from Nookums Paci Plushies to review. However all opinions and views expressed are mine and 100% true.

Guest Blog: Sickness Lingers

Wednesday, February 12, 2014

Oh the dreaded school year, where sickness lingers.

As excited as I was to send my daughter to school this year, I never realized how many sicknesses are passed on from one child to the next. Before my daughter started school she was rarely sick. She has had the odd cold in her life, maybe 2x a year.

Since starting school this last September she has been sick on and off about 4 times. Nothing serious, once was a 48 hour stomach bug, but other than that it's been your typical cough and runny nose, thankfully. I hear about so many kids having strep throat, croup, ear infections the list goes on and on. We are lucky to have only had mild cases of sickness. It just feels like when we are finally healthy, not much time passes and we're all coming down with something else.

Today I received a phone call saying that my daughter wasn't feeling well and wanted to come home. Of course I said okay. Once she arrived home I was shocked to see how great she looked. I was expecting some sickly lethargic child, but nope she seemed fine. She told me her cough was bothering her and that her belly hurt. She rested, watched a movie and played with toys. I guess she just needed that down time away from the classroom, and that's okay with me.

I wish I knew a solution to prevent the sicknesses from happening? Or at least minimize how often it happens. We eat healthy, we are frequently asking her to wash her hands. I think one of the big issues is parents can't really afford or simply can't take enough time off of work. So they send their kids to school while they're still sick, thus infecting the other kids. I know this is boosting her immune system, it's just hard dealing with it in the meantime.

Do you have any words of wisdom on preventing sickness? Any tips or tricks, please share.

Have a wonderful Wednesday everyone. I am going to rest since my throat hurts and I'm not feeling the greatest. Stay healthy, Heidi <3 d

Review & Giveaway: Bravado Designs

Monday, February 10, 2014

Comfortable. Confident. Complete.
Embrace what's best for you.

Essential Embrace Nursing Bra

One of the most important decisions for a mother when deciding to breastfeed is what bra she should choose. Let me answer this question for you because the answer is quite simple: BRAVADO DESIGNS.

Not only are their bras comfortable, supportive and beautiful they are extremely easy to use and have a great team of experts waiting to answer any and all questions you may have. Take a moment and join the BravadoMamas for all your Breastfeeding news and support! The official website also has great info for Finding Your Breastfeeding Rhythm, Common Challenges, even a Resource Library and more!

I was in contact with a wonderful rep at Bravado to arrange for this review and giveaway and I'd like to start off saying what an amazing company Bravado is to deal with. Kind, Generous and Ready to answer any questions I had. This is a huge plus to me, and I would work with them any time!

For this review I received two Essential Embrace Nursing Bras. One in Black with purple piping and the other Chai with Almond Piping. Both beautiful, and equally comfortable. Both arrived very quickly!

Chai with Almond piping and Black with purple piping!

I was shocked when I went on the bravado site to take a look at sizing as I wasn't sure they'd have my exact size, but of course they did. Also, look at all the sizes they do cater to. This is incredible.

So fabulous. Not only do they have all these sizes available they even have someone on staff who can help you figure out what fit is right for you, and make sure it fits! AWESOME AWESOME.

I'll be the first to admit I didn't really think a lot about breastfeeding supplies when I decided I wanted to breastfeed. What a big mistake. I've been using my bras for a week now, and I absolutely won't ever go back to non-supportive store brand bras again. No offense, to them I just didn't realize what I was truly missing!

My back would hurt a lot when feeding time would come around because I didn't have proper cup support, or back support to support the extra weight. I tend to have a bit of oversupply even now at 5 months (and 1 day of strictly breastfeeding Justin, #6!) so after the week of wearing the Essential Embrace I knew it was a keeper when I didn't complain once of my back aching or being sore from lack of support!

Now, that I have done plenty of research I know when I'm looking for nursing bra's I am looking for three important things:
  1. Support
  2. Comfort
  3. Ease

Support: The Essential Embrace nursing bras have four-way stretch fabric molds to your changing breast shape. Wider comfortable straps ensure a snug fit. Lightweight and wire-free, yet strong & supportive - even to a L/M cup.

Comfort: Breathable & seamless fabric provides added comfort, The wider straps also ensure comfort and Bravado Dynatex™ fabric combines premium cotton & luxurious microfiber all in one.

Ease: Proprietary easy open and close clip,  Full drop away bra cup - important for skin to skin contact.

I'm happy to report when my baby is hungry he gets fed right away because I don't have to play around with the straps, or the clasps I can unhook in one try and with one hand!  I also didn't have a problem with wearing my bra for a few hours and having it become loose, and have to keep adjusting. The Essential Embrace stayed in place, as tight as I needed it and was extremely comfortable while doing so.

The Essential Embrace also comes with conversion clips to turn  from a nursing bra to a regular bra, and each bra also comes with a bra extender for the back to grow with you, and your body if you use during pregnancy!

I can safely say I will now donate my old nursing bras and only use Bravado from now on. I just need to get some more because the ease, comfort and support of these bras is something I didn't realize I was lacking. It is extremely important to be aware of how much a good supportive nursing bra can affect a nursing relationship! I've tried many bras, most tended to be too loose, had hurtful under wire or generally didn't do anything for my body. With the Essential Embrace not only do I have a great fit (they even have a bra fit expert on staff to help ensure you get a proper size and comfortable fit!) but I have no bra lines on my shirt, you can't see the outline of my Nursing Pads and they have a seamless back. Perfection.

A few days ago I was taking photos for a product review I was doing. Completely clothed, fully covered but breastfeeding. I decided to share it and another on Instagram because I was completely proud of it. I in turn lost 2 followers within 3 minutes of posting it; and not before they left some "kind" words for me. No biggie, I'm a big girl I can take it.

See anything wrong with this photo? Nope. Neither do I.

Some people do, and that's fine. I understand we live in a world where not everyone agrees with everything others do and I get that. I respect that. I however do not agree with leaving nasty comments or saying mean things when it's about something you don't agree with. This happens A LOT in the world of blogging and even more so in the world of Mom. Something's gotta give.

I don't post breastfeeding photos often. When I do, Generally I get nothing but praise for having 6 kids and breastfeeding. I just don't feel comfortable posting them because the odd time I do get negative comments - I can shrug them off but I worry about others. Others who may be struggling or needing a little extra support and encouragement. I worry about them seeing such comments.

I got pregnant with Jordan at 17. Became his mom at 18. I had zero support let alone ANY support for breastfeeding so I switched after 2 weeks of breastfeeding to formula and that's okay. But it would have been nice to have some support and encouragement.

Did you notice how I phrased that? I "switched after 2 weeks" ? Not failed, switched...

That's because you never fail when you have to switch to formula. You never fail when you chose just go with formula from the get go either. It isn't failing, it's simply feeding your baby. Period. No mother is any better by choosing to breastfeed or formula feed. No mother is better because she CAN breastfeed while one CAN'T (because yes, there are some moms who cannot) but there are also some who simply choose not to - that's okay. Why? Because as long as baby is being fed, who cares?

That's all that matters.

So if I do post those few breastfeeding photos and I get a discouraging comment I do get disheartened because what if a young mom with no support who is struggling with breastfeeding were to see and notice a negative nasty comment? What good do those comments do for her? Even if you don't agree with breastfeeding, or think it's for you - it may be for someone else, so even if you think leaving your opinion is your right (which sure it may be) just think about the consequences first and who it may impact.

I didn't try breastfeeding babies #2 or 3. But did try again with 4. I had lots of help and support but again at two weeks switched - I had gotten mastitis and just couldn't fight on.

So when pregnant with #5 and armed with a team of support both at home and online I knew I could do it! I did! We successfully strictly breastfed for 14.5 months. When he weaned himself. I was and still am beyond proud - but had I had no support, or read comments I see now all over the place I never would have done it. When baby #6 was coming I knew I was going to no matter what because not only did I still have the support but I had the knowledge and knew I could do it and if I ever doubted that I knew I had support, and people to turn to if needed.

What about those that don't have support? Don't have anyone to ask questions? Sure they can switch to formula and that's fine, but what about that one mom who has her heart set on breastfeeding but is having a bit of trouble and would like to reach to others with experience for support before making the switch?

What about that mom who couldn't breastfeed? Or the one who chose formula because it is what's best for their family? Because I've seen a lot of bad mouthing that too.

Just because a mom may not be able to breastfeed, or chooses not to doesn't mean they are any less of a mother. It just means they chose what is best for them, their baby and their family. This isn't something to warrant attacks, this is something everyone needs to realize -  even if you disagree, it's right for her. Not every person who chooses formula, or needs to use it needs educating on why "breast is best" either. Most mothers know this, and most mothers give this a lot of thought. I'm sure there are lots who haven't and aren't too knowledgeable on the subject but there are ways to go about giving information.

So, I'm here to tell you something's gotta give. With Facebook deleting breastfeeding photos - Instagram too... And all the reports "a mom in such and such a place got asked to cover up or move to the bathroom" I think it's time we stop, take a moment to realize - it's no ones business how any child is fed, as long as it's fed.  (I won't even touch on the whole Breastfeeding in public issues right now that have been going on because that's a whole other blog topic).

But, Making rude nasty comments - only hurts those innocent moms who are trying so hard to do what they feel is best for their child and their situation and it's no ones job, or right to bring her down. NO ONE. It may also hurt the poor mom you are leaving the messages for on a level you may never imagine. How about lifting up those who breastfeed and formula feed? How about giving some praise, because they are trying! They just brought a brand new life into this world, the last thing they should be doing is dealing with anyone else's negativity. They are doing what is right for them and their beautiful babies and don't need to be told their decision is wrong, gross or indecent. They don't need to be told any of it.

Educating is one thing, attacking and judging are another. Moms need to stick together, and fight the fight and leave the mom wars behind.

See a young girl needing advice or educating on breastfeeding or formula feeding? Offer up some advice or tell her if she has any questions to ask. Be supportive whatever the choices may be. Don't attack or assume. There's always a story, and a reason why people are doing what they are doing. Simply not knowing or even just choosing to do what's right for them. Let them be the judge, how about being an ear or a shoulder.

Just something to think about.

Review: Undercover Mama

Friday, February 07, 2014

To say I was excited to review this product was an understatement. I have so far to date breastfed babies 19 months and 4 weeks. Not huge considering I have 6 kids and didn't breastfeed all of them - but it's something, and I'm proud of it! Anyways, I never really had much to breastfeed with Jackson. I layered tank tops, I wore extra shirts, I had cheap nursing bras, I used blankets so no one could see anything.... So, when I heard of Undercover Mama and their products I knew I had to get some! They kindly allowed me the chance to review one of their wonderful products and I chose the black Nursing Shirt!

I got a large. It fits perfectly, and is a bit longer - how I like it to be which is a plus!

It came from the US rather quickly, I couldn't wait to try it on and was absolutely amazed at how well it fit. I wasn't so sure I had picked the right size in L, I thought it may be a bit too big but it wasn't! I like wearing tanks that you can see at the bottom of my shirt, and was happy to see this one did just that! I took it out of the package, snapped some pics and got it on!

Tagless too! Couldn't be any better!

I will admit it took me a few minutes to figure out how to attach it to my bra. SMART I know. It must have been a case of the Monday's, I don't know. But once I figured it out it was on and fit like a glove. I love how form fitting it was, and that it wasn't too snug or too baggy. The back didn't fall down like some had wondered on Instagram when I posted - It stayed up, and I think if you get the proper size then you'd be fine. I wore my tank three times so far and not once has it fallen down in the back. Not after washing, either.

Of course, I forgot to snap a pic of my straps so here's one from undercovermama.com

I find it very form fitting, and extremely comfortable!

Of course the real test would be nursing in it. I'm always a little iffy in public nursing because I have to wear so many layers, and I have straps falling all over the place, and oh gosh don't let that nursing pad fall on the ground! Well although I didn't go out while using the Nursing Shirt I did use it as if I was out and it took away all those worries. I had my shirt to lift up and that was it. Undo the bra, and away you go. No muss, no fuss. The nursing pad could stay in the cups and tuck under and no skin showed from my belly, which is ALWAYS what I worry about and because the tank went under my shirt without having extra straps I could wear a normal shirt and have basically no boob showing either. I know some people can be a bit iffy about nursing in public or in front of people for that reason.  I would sometimes use a blanket to cover up my belly  - but with the Undercover Nursing tank it isn't a problem! I was very very happy with it, and feel confident I can wear it out and not have to worry about a slip or having my belly show. Something I'm not that comfortable with even if my belly is shrinking back (ever so slowly!)

No belly showing, just pure comfort for us both!

I most definitely will use this nursing shirt for the rest of my nursing journey, and probably after too! Its really comfortable and feels great on! Above you can see baby nursing and the black of the nursing shirt at the bottom, no belly! Perfect, perfect! There is no need for multiple tank tops with multiple straps anymore, and for this I'm glad! Thank you Undercover Mama!

Guest Blog: My Girl is Turning Five!!

Wednesday, February 05, 2014

I cannot believe that in a few short weeks my daughter will be turning 5. It seems like time has literally flown by. I still remember holding her in the hospital like it was yesterday. At the same time I feel like I can't always remember small details, like they're just slipping away and I don't even realize it. We only have 2 children so far and birthday parties are kind of a big deal. We have lots of family and friends that always come so it's always a full house. This year is my daughters first year of school so naturally she asked if she could invite some of her friends from school. We didn't have any problem with this, especially since she doesn't have a ton of friends outside of school and no cousins either.

Since our house is pretty small and we are in the process of finishing our basement we decided to host her party at an indoor playground. She is absolutely thrilled about the whole thing. She looks at her calendar daily and counts down the days to her actual birthday (February 26th) and her party day (March 1st). The place that we are holding the party includes food, drinks and snacks for everyone attending up to 25 guests. I stress out about parties when it comes to food, themes, guests, space etc. Having her party at a facility equipped to handle big groups makes me feel much better, plus I don't have to worry about cleaning up any messes haha.

I have a friend from high school that makes custom cakes for any occasion. Her prices are very competitive and her work is incredible. My daughter has requested a "Frozen" cake from the Disney movie. I cannot wait to see the cake and even more my daughters face when she sees it. I still need to put together loot bags and just the thought of getting them ready makes me panicky, I know I'm weird most people love this stuff. I don't know why I get this way, but I can't help it. At least having the party and food taken care of takes a lot of stress off of my plate.

In 3 short months we will be celebrating my sons 2nd birthday, time really needs to slow down a little. Do you love or hate party planning? Do your kids have a party coming up soon?

Thanks for reading, have a wonderful Wednesday. Heidi <3

Influenster #MysteryBrand VoxBox!

Tuesday, February 04, 2014

I thought I was lucky enough to be among the first picked for the very 1st Canadian VoxBox but now I can't believe how lucky I was to be chosen for this one! The new Mystery Brand Vox Box!

I got the e-mail last week saying I qualified and I needed to take the survey to see if I would be picked.
I took the survey and was sad to find out at the end my hair wasn't right for the box!

Yesterday when the kids walked in my daughter announced "Mom! You got a package!" I look up and there it was... The new Mystery Vox Box!

Pretty sneaky Influenster! I was very surprised, and excited. I opened it and right away you could smell something amazing. I opened it and there was 3 small sample bottles. No brand, no label only saying Sample and L'Oreal Canada plus what they were: Shampoo, Conditioner and Split End treatment which is perfect for my hair oddly enough! I can't even begin to wonder what brand this is, but I'm really eager to find out!

I waited until this morning to test them out as I am having major ear issues at the moment and I wanted to make sure I got to really enjoy the samples because, hello! Who doesn't love smelling something sweet and rich - it truly smells heavenly.

I am going to use up these samples for the week and I will be back next week to share how much I loved, or didn't love it (but just from one use I can already safely say I will enjoy it!)

Be sure to head on over to the Influenster site to sign up if you already haven't! You don't want to miss out on these great boxes filled with goodies to test out and promote! It's a lot of fun, and a surprise every time!

Disclosure: I did receive this #MysteryBrand box from Influenster for free for the purpose of testing and reviewing. The opinions and thoughts expressed here are solely 100% my own and factual, I did not receive any other compensation for my test or review.

SleepBelt: Review & Giveaway!

Sunday, February 02, 2014

"A hands free skin-to-skin support system, SleepBelt allows baby to sleep soundly on mom or dad’s chest while giving parents their hands back to read, use a tablet, or their smart phone; it literally belts your sleeping baby to you!  With a new baby, breaks are important... Make the most of them."

There are very few products I believe a new parent "must have" but this is one of the few - SleepBelt. Justin is a little bit bigger than the suggested size and age for the SleepBelt which is 0-4 months, and up to 15lbs.. But when I saw it, I knew I had to try it. He is one of those babies who always need to be held, and snuggled. I absolutely love it, but sometimes when having five other children I need a moment or two with hands free - even when holding the baby! So, this was perfect for me!

I got in touch with Hayley the wonderful woman behind SleepBelt and even though I got her name wrong at first, she was super sweet and kind. She agreed to let me try the product, answered any questions I had and was even happy to allow me to do the very giveaway at the end of this review. She is most definitely a pleasure to work with!

My SleepBelt arrived very quickly as they are located in Toronto. Locally owned and operated? Bonus! We all know I love supporting Canadian made products! I was so excited I couldn't wait to try it out.

Justin is teething so his level of  "OMG I NEED MOMMY NOW!"  has gone up a few notches and during the day working Customer Care; answering e-mails I need my hands to be able to answer when an e-mail reaches my inbox. I hate putting him down so it's been quite a challenge to do a lot of my work with him on my lap, but I do it... Now? It's just gotten much smoother.

The SleepBelt is NOT intended to take the place of Mommy or Daddy's loving arms, it's simply here to help. We don't use it all the time but the times we have its been a huge success. Justin loved it, didn't try to escape and wasn't too squirmy. He fell asleep quite fast, I was able to kiss his little head and talk to him while he drifted to sleep. He has been in it many times over the last few days and is quite content. We were even able to breastfeed in it too, and it was extremely comfortable and was refreshing for me to be able to reach over and grab my cup of water while he was still nursing and I didn't disrupt him or have him unlatch while doing it, this was a huge plus for me.

Here Justin fell fast asleep, and I was able to answer e-mails and even write notes out while he slept soundly, in place safely on my chest.

Look who just finished nursing safely and comfortably and fell fast asleep in the SleepBelt!

A huge factor to me when testing out products is making sure they are safe for babies and children. They must, must, must be safe. The SleepBelt isn't a carrier, or a wrap that is meant for Babywearing. It is simply NOT. The SleepBelt is meant for when baby wants cuddles, and/or to sleep on mom or dad's chest and they are in a seated position. Like any product you use with caution, but you do not use this as a carrier. Thankfully, the SleepBelt comes with a warning card of it's own that does state this.

A Caution Card: I think every product needs to come with one of these.

How is the Sleep Belt Different from anything else?
  • The SleepBelt has no shoulder straps, no buckles and stretches for simple on/off and easy transfer of a sleeping tot to a bassinet, bed or crib.
  • The SleepBelt can be adjusted to become tighter or looser to ensure baby stays snuggled in comfortably and naturally.
  • The SleepBelt is simple, quick, easy to use and isn't hard on wearer's back or baby.

The SleepBelt comes in three sizes. Petite (22"-34"), Regular (30"-40") and Long (38"-50") it also comes in three colours: Aqua Blue, Basic Black and Hot Pink. I got the regular belt, which was perfect for Justin's size and my size - it's important to take note of the measurements and get the correct size for you and baby when purchasing. SleepBelt retails for $59.99 and can be purchased directly from their website or a local retailer near you.

I am very impressed. I wish I had found this when Justin was first born! He was born at 36 weeks, 4 days - which is early. I held him a lot, and did skin to skin a lot. It would have really been helpful. I'm just lucky I found it now because even though he's a bit bigger it's working extremely well for us. All the nights I spent struggling to hold Justin and nurse him while reading books with the 4 other little ones while Jackson pulled at me and was hanging off me, trying to answer work e-mails or help another child with their homework beside me on the couch - won't be as hard to manage now, and I won't fear him falling or being nudged by an older child!

This product would also be a huge help to parents, or grandparents who have issues with arthritis or stiff hands/arms. They can safely hold babies and snuggle with them with no fear of them falling/dropping, or hurting themselves after a little while. Too tired in the middle of the night during a nursing session? Worried you may fall asleep in the rocking chair? It's just a little added piece of mind! It's also great for baby showers, and hospital gifts for a new mom!

The SleepBelt is also a PTPA award winner, they recently were given the seal! A huge Congratulations to them! You can take a look at it here on the PTPA website, and if you've given the SleepBelt a try feel free to leave a review of it there as well!...

If you have a moment, SleepBelt is up for a Mompreneur Award of Excellence! If you think they deserve to be in the top spot, which I do - please go give them a quick vote: HERE!
